Hi Jane,
I got a free untrained spoiled horse that no trainers in my area would work with. I have her going well now and wanted to take dressage lessons as she shows a lot of dressage talent, everyone who sees her agrees! but without even seeing her I was told she was not good enough becuase she is a anglo! heart breaking I’ve been in a stoop ever sense! I went out and tried this and she has offered me more then a start of piaffe! I sure do have a rare Gem and I’m ordering your tapes!
i like her teaching style
Ankys style involves using rolkur to force the horse into submission, so actually, you did say that.
No Ankys methods do not include forcing the horse at all, so actually, i did not say that.
that was very interesting! i never knew that was how you trained a horse to do that! i know that my question doesnt have anything to do with this video, but i hope you’ll answer it if you have time! i dont want to go into too much detail but the mare i jump did training level dressage with my trainer so she knows how to come on the bit at the trot and hold it pretty well. but at the canter i’m having a bit of trouble!
i’ve tried holding a constant pressure until she gives but have always had trouble doing this and still following her head through my elbows. so then i just tried a lot of flexing and half halting and this just made her lift her head higher and tilt it in many different directions. so my question is, how do i hold the contact and still give to allow the motion of the canter? i just cant seem to get her on the bit! any advice would be much appreciated!

Watch the video on the Connecting Half Halt at rbsavoie. Holding a constant pressure isn’t the answer. She’ll just resist of overflex at the jaw.
ok! i just watched that video and it was very good! it put things in a better order but i still dont understand a couple things. you said to add leg for 3seconds and just before the surge, you close your outside hand. that i understand, but how long do you hold the outside rein? do you still hold the outside rein and flex with the inside hand at the same time? i’ve tried doing this with the mare i ride but she seems to just get more crooked so thats why i thought i must be doing something wrong
If she’s getting crooked, she’s probably not forward enough from your legs. Do a few lengthenings for a few strides to make sure she’s going forward from your legs. Then legs first, outside rein a fraction of a second later and inside rein a fraction of a second after that. So, to the naked eye, it appears that everything is on for about 3 seconds.
ok i see now!!! thank you SO MUCH!!!! that completly cleared everything up! again, thank you!!!
Draw reins worked on my horse!
ive ridden different horses in draw reins but i dont really like them very much. ive seen it work for some horses, but i just dont like the idea of forcing the horse’s head into the position & i know the mare i ride would throw a fit! if nething i would use side reins, but she has been put in them b4 & she hung and got tense. she’s the kind of horse that just needs 2figure it out 4herself. & i know i would much rather take my time & train her 2 WANT 2 come on the bit then just put her head there
If you use the connecting aids correctly, you’ll connect your horse from back to front.
Draw reins just force your horse’s head into a fake position. That’s front to back riding. Never a good idea.
I have a question to ask you. When you are doing the extended trot, what do you do to not bounce around as much?
What would you do if the horse has learned most of the more advanced movements, but dislikes being really collected in any gait?
The rider in the video has her legs so far from the horse tummy, what about teaching her how to drive because she cannot do anything else without understanding drive. working on Piaffe seems truly very primature , especially since the core of your students are in training level … I do not udnerstand ….
My students range from Training level through Grand Prix.
Actually, egasserdsterling, the rider should be passive when the horse is learning halfsteps so the horse will not be overwhelmed with aids. The rider should not apply driving aids and should be light in the seat while the ground person is influencing – imagine the poor horse if he were inundated by the rider’s aids and the ground person while learning something new – talk about causing tension!! This footage was taken from an USDF symposium where there were mostly upperlevel riders.
i like the way you work. I do it the same way. I think you have started this Piaffe from the ground without rider? Its the way i do. Do you know Bent Branderup? I think so. I have attended a lot of trainings with him.
Some suggestions…
Soften your tummy muscles , lengthen your legs and try to be as supple as possible. Don’t forget to keep breathing – some riders actually forget and the resulting tension increases stiffness.
And take lunging lessons on as many different horses as possible to strengthen your seat.
agree with you compleatly,
That horse has pretty feet
Thank you for these video clips. I find alot of the advanced clinicians intimidating and not welcoming to the lower level riders such as myself – but not you. I’ve really gotten alot from you and have something to ‘visualize’ as I ride. Thank you!
