Here is how I did it: Teach the basic commands of backing up, going forward, and moving off left and right from the ground. After that, I started by tapping him on the chest while holding the lead rope so he couldn’t back up. Not knowing what I wanted, he tried moving off left and right, but I blocked his forward motion with the stick and then kept tapping. cont. . .

Eventually, once he tried back, forward, left and right without success, he tried up, and I rewarded him with release (stopped tapping) and a cookie, and then repeat. You do have to be careful though and make sure that you reward not rearing as well, or you may end up with a horse that rears to get a cookie when you are asking for it. Hope this helps.

right sounds simple enough here…lol. I wanted to teach one of my horses. My 4 year old can count (dig:P) but I dont wanrt to teach him to rear in case it becomes a habit.

My 2 yr old filly is clicker trained and we were playing in the field when she reared, so I clicked her – reward! From there, it only took about 15 mins for her to rear on command, right up high and pawing the air. I’ve only had her 7 weeks, but she loves to learn/play. Try clicker training.

i really want to teach my horse to rear.
My only concern is that i wont do it right, and he is 17hh. He would hurt if he did it close.
Also, he has never even tried to rear, and i dont think i could get him to, even if he was really frustrated!!

If you reward it all the time you will only achieve levade when you feed it.!

wow, my mare rears but doesnt buck when shes angry, only about a foot off the floor usually unless shes really spooked. shes been known to rear into a tree when a stupidly named horse ‘Lady’ bolted and tried to kick her. If i had one of them clicker thingies id click her when she did a small safe rear.

OMG i have been trying to teach my pony for months how to do that …….. how did u do that?

  14. WiccasKiss says:

it takes a sassy sort of horse to do this, my mare doesn’t rear from the ground, since she is very naughty under halter, nice job though.

i really want to teach my pony tricks. i started with bowing today, and want to do other stuff aswell, deffinately rearing, when im on her and from the the ground, but i dont really know how to do it. has anyone got any tips?

  17. Marenlene says:

That was very interesting to watch. I started to teach my horse the rearing but found that when he is allowed to rear he easily gets overexcited and starts kicking although he is normally a very quiet and reliable horse.
    Nice vid!

The horse is relaxed and paying attention! My horse knows a few tricks, but I’d like to train him to rear on cue too ;)

  23. KendraHarvey says:

This is how trick training should be. It’s obvious he’s content with your request, he doesn’t have a smug look or ears pinned.

Clearly you’ve been extremely thorough and ‘fun’ when teaching him. Well done!
