Horse training question?

Published by Horse Training Help under Horse Training

Can somebody give me some tips on getting my horse to be pushing from his hind end, instead of being lazy and falling on his front (during the canter)… any tips, websites, or books would be very helpful!

squeeze him a bit more with your legs when you cue him into a canter. It also helps if you apply slightly more pressure on his mouth, and get him to break at the poll (tuck his head in). All this will help him collect.

Every time he does what you want, make sure to reward him (treats, pats on the neck and LOTS of praise.) After awhile, he’ll associate your praises with the collected canter you’ve been asking him to do..and will do it gladly.

First, teach him to open up and enjoy cantering by NOT collecting him. After he opens up a little, start working on shifting his weight to his hind end by doing half halts to steady him. When he starts to fall on the forehand, do another half halt to shift him back. Make sure you are centered in the saddle as well. It may not be laziness, it may be some weakness in his hind end, so if you build up the strength there, he should start carrying himself more and more on his hind end.
