horse legs help/ show horse training help (answer one or the other please)?

1. when i lung my horse, sometimes she will hit her hind legs, near the hoof on the edges of the round pen. Her feet hug the fence but her body is a good distance away. the ring is not small at all. Is there something i can put on her? i dont want her to break her leg.

2. I was also wondering how i can teach her the many show gates (shes gated) but i dont know how to get her feet up. Ive heard of leg weighs and weighted shoes. how much would weighted shoes cost?

Q1. There’s nothing that you can put on your horses legs to prevent her breaking one. Splint boots and bell boots help, but if you are worried about her getting a leg caught, I would recommend putting plywood or something similar around the interior of the round pen up to a height of about two feet. (Used conveyor belts from farm machinery is also good….and it’s cheap and easy to put up).

Q2. Be careful about using weighted shoes, they can put undue stress on joints and muscles and will bring on arthritis quicker. If you want her to start gaiting, I would recommend talking to a trainer who specializes in your particular breed. Even so, some gait-bred horses may never gait…..they’re a strange thing.
