Dry Summer or Winter – Horse Hooves Still Need Moisture – Good Mud – Rick Gore Horsemanship

www.thinklikeahorse.org – I talk about how mud is needed and helps keep healthy hooves healthy. As I talk about in other videos, having some mud for the horse to walk in will help hooves not dry out and become brittle. Too much of anything is not good, less is more in horses. Adding oils and moisture conditioning may help in moderation but too often they are used too much and they do more damage than doing nothing. Knowing and understanding this is all aspects of horsemanship will help you help your horse be a happy and healthy horse.

Lacey (sp?) looks so pretty; the others are good looking also :) . Thanks for the tips, I would probably not have thought of that. I do not currently own or work with horses, but I used to take lessons, I would love to own or lease a horse someday or at least get to work with them more

All it takes with any animal is commons sense…you’re like me and are not surprised or amused how many don’t have it…most claim to rocket scientists..smiles

I live out on Cape Cod and we haven’t had much of a winter out here this year. not much snow and anywere from the 40′s to even the 60′s. and I’m loving it. you talked in other videos about the benefits of mud. my boy has the dirtiest hooves! I was wondering what that stuff was I seen people putting on there horse’s hooves.thanks for the video Rick. You helped me give my horse a better life :)

    Great video.

My farrier tells me the same thing and says the hoof products can do more harm than good and to only use them when it’s necessary. He says seeing the clops of hoof mud laying around is good because that’s pulling out debris. He’s also a natural horseman and says the same things you say Rick. He told me he cringes when he drives past super lush pastures and says it’s founder waiting to happen.

“Wintertime, 68 degrees…” lol! Love the video, Rick.

  11. pasturepuffs says:

Snow = Mother Nature’s hoof moisturizer.

I also had to laugh at 68 degrees! We just came off a cold snap of -20! Rick, are you sure it’s not summer there?

  12. bondad4me says:

Thank, my farrier says the same thing about hoof products.

Wow Rick…you were monotone, didn’t talk a bunch of trash; insult or degrade the sexes and people who have little experience!!! Was it hard? I was getting kind of board…good vid, but what did u do with Mr. Gore? Bring him back space creature!

@horseawareness : Well to prove a point, no matter how I do a video there will be some petty witch wanting to run her mouth and cut it down since they have no life and are miserable so they feel the need to say something negative and counter productive. Typical barn bully witch behavior. Can’t just learn something without running their mouth and showing their ignorance. Perhaps if more people followed the rule, If you can’t say something nice, shut the hell up.

Good to see Lacey out and doing well. Is she out of “founder jail”, or just getting to eat with the boys for a few minutes of horsey time?

  17. jaserovy says:

What happens if a horse is in mud for extended amount of time? We;ve had a lot of rain/snow in northern Indiana. Thanks for your videos.
