The title is called begining horse riding! Its supose to be a novice rider! They arent just trying to show how to collect a horse but teaching people who dont know how to ride how to. With this horse and rider they are showing the begining process of how to collect your horse and what to look for.

Then these people need to watch Al Dunning, Tim McQuay, or Bob Avila videos because THEY do it right. This person is only pulling the horse into the bridle when the video is called beginning collection. The horse is still working on his forehand and this lady that’s putting the video out there is playing it off as if the horse is actually getting collected.

The video is NOT called begining collection, its called begining riding. Big difference. Im sure the rider really doesnt know what she is doing, If they put an experienced rider on the horse that can do it. How are the people watching that dont know how gonna be able to do it? It is obvious that the horse is not collected because the rider doesnt know how, however the trainer seems knowledgable and shows the beggining stages in teaching yourself, or your horse how to collect.

Even if it is a green rider the horse is not collected and she isn’t even going about it the right way because collection deosn’t come from pulling the head in at all, It comes from sitting the horse on its hind end and using the energy the horse is creating in his haunches to get it to stretch over his back and round up to make the gait swinging, relaxed and uphill.

I never said the horse was collected… But i did say the rider is green. You dont start out riding knowing how to collect a horse, I thought that was pretty obvious. Im sure when I first started riding i did the same thing! Untill I learned better of it. Im sure, with an expierenced rider this horse would collect and move into a frame.

but should the person not be trying to teach her how to collect the horse properly?

  7. flynbytoofaston 21 Feb 2009 at

well im sure she probably is, the girl just hasnt gotten the hang of it yet. Im sure i didnt collect a horse properly when i first learned to collect a horse.

oh wow, this is just aweful. im shocked to this up as a training video… first of all that horse is not collected at any point in the video, collection comes from the seat, not the hands being spaced out like that…i even saw the girl see-saw the bit back and fourth in the horses mouth, this video is just bizzare…..

  9. egrdogon 30 Mar 2009 at

actually he is… would you only accept the horse licking his chest as collection? remember this is western riding… in many riding disciplines you do not ride from your seat in the same way you do in dressage, especially w/western

  10. AlliWalkeron 22 Apr 2009 at

    There is no see-sawing, silly.

  11. AlliWalkeron 22 Apr 2009 at

A variation of the canter, seen in western riding, is called a lope, and generally is quite slow, no more than 13-19 km/h (8-12 mph).

Rescue horses in Nebraska (Buffalo County, USA) need donors / adopters / good homes ASAP (references required!). Please spread the word / contact me for more info, thanks!

no thats not collection either, collection is through the back and neck and haunches… if this is western collection they should come up with another term for it.

    i know, I hate expertvillage

This is not a bad video, she explains clearly the pressure/release/reward training aspect.

BUT, it really really bugs me when people use the word “collection” to mean “slow”.

Maybe the western community uses it more interchangebly. In the dressage world, going slow and thinking it’s “collection” is a BIG no-no!

  17. jmdnarrion 26 Oct 2009 at

    thank you!!
But I would like to give credit to her for mentioning that collection is about moving off the hind leg and into the bridle, this trainer does not talk about just slowing the horse down.

  18. portfoliochefon 20 Nov 2009 at

I’m sorry but to call this collection is just desperate. This horse has no idea how to be collected because it is not balanced. He doesn’t know how to carry himself let alone a human on his back. He needs to be ridden FORWARDS into self-carriage and be able to balance himself and his rider before he can be “collected” or, more acccurately, ridden into self-carriage.

  19. JustTheGirl112on 24 Dec 2009 at

the horse isnt even balanced! how can it be collected?

  20. Julieanne43on 28 Dec 2009 at

This horse looks very green to me and pulling on its head isnt going to teach it to relax into the bridle. It needs to be balanced and work from behind to think about softening

look guys this is rude! this worked on my dressage horse, and i won a 1st ribbon in a comp. with him. >:(

HA HA HA HA COLLECTION FOR BEGINNERS ???? right away you know that this woman is a complete imbecile and has zero idea what collection means …. that is why america is so far behind the others countries because of trainers like that … holding the reins like that, so far apart and the horse having his hallow back is called ” bus driving ” … dumbass trainer

  23. RNSpiceyon 12 Jan 2010 at

Actually holding your reins out like that is to encourage your horse to lower their head, therefore helping them to collect. It’s how I get my horse to lower his head.

  24. 147kdon 16 Feb 2010 at

    hahahahah…. this is gay.

  25. MrBobKnowsBeston 16 Mar 2010 at
