Hi!
I just want to make sure that you truly mean "halter" and not "showmanship." They are two very different classes!
Halter is judges and balance, structural correctness, and muscle tone. The horse should look balanced. This does require a trained eye though. They should be well proportioned – they’re head, neck, body, croup should all be in proportion. They should have straight legs both when standing and when traveling. Remember though – no horse is perfect – the goal is to get as close as possible though. In halter – you will typically show from the gate. You will walk toward the judge and then trot away and turn left and continue trotting into the line up.
In showmanship the class is judged on YOU! It’s judged on your ability to show the horse – part of this judging is on how you and your horse are also groomed. In this class, you will be required to lead your horse at a walk, trot the horse off from a walk or trot, stop, back up, pivot, set up squarely, and you will need to do the "quarter method". Your judge will give you a "pattern" before the class begins.
In both of these classes people usually wear a showmanship/halter outfit. Typically this is could a blazer with nice pants and a cowboy hat or recently fancy outfits have become the norm. For one simple show at the fair though – I would suggest just planning to have clean well fitting pants and a button up shirt and a nice cowboy hat.
Your horse should have its mane cut to ~4" in length and then banded (if a stocky type) and if it’s a pleasure type horse (arabian, saddlebred, etc.) the mane should be left long (DO NOT CUT!). Ideally they would wear show halters, but don’t think that you must go out and spend $200 on a new show halter. If you only have a regular halter and lead – then use that – just get it clean! One word of advice – most people use chains on their leads. If you go with this norm – make sure you do not touch the chain – this is an automatic disqualification. Just hang onto the lead – either the nylon lead rope or the leather lead strap that comes with show halters.
This is an okay video to show you what halter is like. It’d be better to find one from a local show instead as this doens’t show how you deal with just one judge. Notice the grooming of the horses. Notice how the horses all stand "square." These are all well proportioned, well balanced horses. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRT79xoLrGo
This is more of what you’ll see at your fair if you have halter as a class: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gkODJUUg_8&feature=related
This is a video of showmanship. It’ll give you the basic idea of what showmaship is and what the elements of the pattern are. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-frEygO48cQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38kQBx20iys&feature=related
**Also note – in halter you can touch the horse – you can pick up a horse’s foot and move it if necessary – you can pull on their tail to get them to stand square. In showmanship – NO TOUCHING of the horse!
I hope this helps. I am a carded horse show judge and am willing to give you any help or advice I can. I can send you some practice patterns if you’d like for showmanship.
My best advice though is – put a smile on and plan to have fun. Don’t plan to win…just to have fun. If you can get a friend that has some show experience to help you plan your wardrobe and help groom your horses that would be a huge help.
Have fun!!
just take it slow and practice a lot get your parents to help act like the judge and walk around the horse while you in pose and just do it a few times a day don’t over work the horse they get bored really easy with halter its the lamest event in 4h you just stand there lol oh and have who ever you get to walk around the horse hold a piece of paper so the horse gets used to the judges clip bored for ranking you
it really depends on your type of training. this past summer my horses and i went to vermont for 2 months and i learned natural horse training it is really amazing what you can do. i acually ride my hores with no toguh halter just a rope attached around their rope halter it is really worth looking into. there is no bit and the horse is so much more comfortable and u really bond with them.
natural horse training is all about pressure and realase you put pressure for instance on there left side but not enough pressure to make them uncomfortable. with enough pressure they will move to the left to relieve the pressure as soon as they turn that direction you give way and that is there reward. they then will learn the new "commands" and they will even guess what u want them to do. i really think yu need to look into because its more fun for u and deff the horse becasue your not yanking their mouth with a bit and halter
your first step is to go to your local tack shop and ask them for a rope pressure and realease halter then from there try to find nature horse training videos and teach yourself or find a teacher. if you do this and your horses are like mine you will be very pleased all i have to do if i am not riding but want them to go somewhere is point and they go it truelly is amazing and they see u as a part of the herd because ur not hurting them and they respect you for that
hope all works out if you can not due this or u are just not interested one big tip is never let a horse disrespect you for example never let them walk ahead of you or itch themselves on you. if you exspect to ride a horse they need to respect u and see u as dominant
GOOD LUCK
