Get a trainer and re-think your time line. You will almost certainly not be able to show her this year.

I am more concerned about you and your friends experience than the horses. So if you want the best chance of success with the least amount of risk; take you, your friend and the horse to a trainer (or have them come to you) for the first few times for a evaluation and some tips.

At that point in that horse’s life, training it is out of the question. Even showing is out of the question. The max age you [[should]] break a horse to ride is 10 years old.

That horse should strictly be a companion horse. She’s too old to train, or even retrain, to be a show horse. If she’s skittish and only lets you and your friend touch her, the show grounds are the last place on earth she should be.

If you still want to try and ride her, don’t do it yourself. You’re obviously a begginer. Have your trainer (or just hire one) to back her and train her.

Since she is elder, just being ridden, and she’s so skittish, riding might damage her worse. Just lease/borrow/buy a horse that is trained, younger than 15, and calm.

If you expect to show her this year you will be rushing her. Dont rush her and you will need more help than just you and your friend. You can start by working with her on leading and ground manners while being around other people.

Natural Horsemanship is a great thing. Clinton Anderson, Pat Parelli, John Lyons… Etc.. Clinton Anderson is the quicker at "getting it done" but he’s not gentle, Pat Parelli is great but he makes things take long, John Lyons I don’t know much about but I don’t like him, his teaching style is off. He’s often mean to people.

Hope this helps, I went with Parelli and it’s worked great. Once you pick one, stick with it because everyone thinks you should go with someone else.

    Hope this helps!

Love your question. "Any tips on Training a Horse to ride?"
I don’t think I have ever seen a horse ride. What tips do you think you need to get your horse riding? and riding what?
