I own a 6 year old quarter horse gelding and i was wondering what is a good training book is? i am training him to be a english and western show horse maybe even reining after he learns the basics of showing. He is broke and everything i was just wondering a good book that i could read (that is in no way confusing) to help my horse along in his training. like a headset, slowing down, more soft to the bit, side passing, piveting… well if you know a good book that will help me please let me know!

Anything by Mark Rashid.
Or more appropriately, everything by him.
John Lyons has some good methods, so does Lynn Palm.
But honestly, I really don’t like any horse training books, its nearly impossible to train a horse correctly from a book/movie. It’s a lot less confusing to just work with an instructor one or two times a week, you will have someone that understands you and your horses individual needs.
I would suggest staying away from Monty Roberts books…
I’ve also found that the natural horsemanship methods are often misinterpreted/ misused/ generally ineffective and produce some training disasters.
I ride dressage, but reining and dressage are similar, just different saddles, different terms, and different speeds!
A book I enjoy is 101 Arena Exercises: A Ringside Guide for Horses and Riders. It gives different exercises that promote various techniques – both english and western. The book is by Cherry Hill. She has a specific western one as well, but I think it has most of the same things as 101AE, just smaller and specifically geared for the western horse. She also has 101 Horsemanship and Equitation patterns for Western and English Riders. I’m personally a Cherry Hills fan.
I have gotten books on ebay that were really great that helped me with my horse.
